10. The Blythe Intaglios, CA, USA.
More or less undiscovered until the prevalence of modern-day flight, these geoglyphs could be up to 2000 years old.
These ancient desert carvings comprise some of over 600 such Native American structures in the Southwestern US, but what sets them apart from all others is their impressive size and detail. The largest of them is a male giant measuring 171 feet in length.
No one knows the purpose of Intaglios, but it has been theorized that they were messages drawn in the sand for revered ancestors, or drawings of gods.
9. Trilithon at Baalbek, Lebanon.
Like the stones of the pyramids in Egypt or Stonehenge, it is a matter of great speculation how these three 750-1200 ton structures were moved and arranged.
However, they are mostly agreed to be of Roman origin, as they formed part of the podium of the temple of their god, Jupiter.
8. The Antikythera Mechanism, Greece.
The mechanism was used for calculations in astronomy in the ancient Greek world, and is around 2000 years old. The piece, discovered in 1900, is quite advanced technology, preceding anything of its kind for over 1000 years.
Its likely use was to figure the exact location of heavenly bodies, specifically the planets, but its exact usage is of course the topic of great scientific debate.
We do know that nothing of its kind has been found before or since and all of our previous knowledge of this era and culture suggest that such exacting measurements made capable by this device should not have been available to astronomers living in this era.
7. Stone Spheres of Costa Rica.Hundreds of perfectly shaped spheres litter the Southwestern jungles of this Central American nation. Ranging from mere inches to upwards of 8 feet, experts are perplexed as to their origin and purpose.
Again, like other large stone structures, how they were moved around with primitive technology will probably remain a complete mystery.
The objects are shrouded in myth. Legend states that natives may have had a substance that polished the rocks, but other theories suggest that they could have been naturally derived or from the lost city of Atlantis.
6. Star Child Skull, Mexico.
Famously obtained by Lloyd Pye in 1999, the original theory stated that the archaeological object was of extraterrestrial origin. Scientists believed that the skull was of a deformed Native American rather than a human-ET hybrid. The 900 year-old-skull was discovered in 1930. Ongoing research has revealed so much unusual DNA that experts believe that the piece belongs to a new as-yet undiscovered species. Efforts to unmask the secrets of the skull hope to soon have a map of the entire genome.
5. Stonehenge, U.K.
Everyone’s favorite isolated megalith for Druid worship is actually among a very dense concentration of ancient structures. This sophisticated ancient astronomical instrument follows a familiar theme of large stones mysteriously moved and arranged in such a way which baffles modern experts. Each of the 30 stones is about 10 feet high, weighing about 26 tons. They are arranged in such a way as to align with Equinoxes and Solstices that can be no accident, a fact that has caused many to speculate widely about its origins. While a pilgrimage to England is out of the realm of possibility, an exact replica of Stonehenge exists at the Maryhill Museum of Art in The US state of Washington.
4. Great Pyramid at Giza, Egypt.
This is the only one of the original 7 wonders of the ancient world that remains intact. The tallest man-made structure in the world for almost 4000 years, the herculean effort required to complete it have led to centuries of theories and discourse, and no one knows to date exactly how it was built.
The Great Pyramid of Khufu is the biggest and oldest of the three primary pyramids built in the ancient world near present-day Cairo.
Its mysteries will likely remain just that, as prevailing archaeological evidence remains in the world of theory. What is known is that the knowledge required to complete such a structure seems well beyond the technological abilities of humans at that time.
3. Nazca Lines, Peru.
An even more impressive set of roughly 70 geoglyphs exist much to the South of the Blythe Intaglios. These giant mythical figures carved into the desert sands of Peru seem to be all that remains of an ancient and mysterious advanced civilization.
Speculations include the possibility that at least some of the glyphs were used to help one along the spiritual path, according to the Daily Mail.
However, the date of probable origin and the little-known mysterious civilization have also led to speculation of alien involvement, or perhaps the knowledge of prehistoric lost technology.
2. Sacsayhuaman, Peru.
Part of the historic Incan capital Cuzco, this megalithic architecture again consists of large heavy carved stones, leading to speculation as to how a pre-technological civilization would have constructed it.
What makes this spot even more amazing than the Pyramids or Stonehenge are that they not only had to be transported large distances and arranged, but fit together so perfectly using no mortar in such a way that nothing can fit between the spaces in the walls.
This would have comprised a stonemason’s nightmare even in modern times.
1. Pumapunku at Tiwanacu, Bolivia.
This is perhaps the best example of mystifying ancient structure requiring enormous skill to complete, if not the most impressive.
The large heavy blocks were fit together in the fashion of a puzzle, forming joints without mortar or compound. Moreover, they bear no tool marks, leading to wonderment as to how they were formed.
The natural beauty of the location would have amplified the spiritual significance of pilgrims engaging in rituals using mind-altering hallucinogenic plants. DNA samples obtained from mummies at the site have confirmed remnants of psychoactive substances.
